📖 About Greensburg-Decatur County Public Library
The Greensburg-Decatur County Public Library traces its founding to 1901, when Mayor A.M. Willoughby secured a $15,000 Carnegie Foundation grant. Land for $6,000 was purchased on the former R.H. Watson Foundry site, and the Carnegie Library opened on January 25, 1905, with Will Cumback as the first board president and Bessie Monfort as the inaugural librarian. Over the following decades the library expanded — a new wing in 1967, a mezzanine in 1979, and the county's first bookmobile in 1985. The Westport Branch Library opened in 1989. A new 1993 building (groundbreaking October 4, 1992; dedication August 29, 1993) replaced the Carnegie structure and gave the system the modern facility it uses today at 1110 East Main Street. The library's service area grew from city-only to Washington Township (1975) and eventually all of Decatur County (1983–1984). Today it is a member of Evergreen Indiana, sharing a statewide catalog and delivery network with more than 100 Indiana libraries, and offers the Sally Crane StoryWalk installed through the Sally Crane Memorial Fund in collaboration with the community.
