San Diego County, California is served by San Diego County Library (SDCL) — a system of 33 branches (plus two bookmobiles and two 24/7 Library To Go kiosks) covering the county’s unincorporated communities and the cities that do not run their own library. It is one of the 25 busiest library systems in the United States by materials circulated. 📚 About San Diego County Library

San Diego County Library (SDCL) is the public library system for San Diego County’s unincorporated communities and the incorporated cities that do not operate their own library. According to the library, it runs 33 branches along with two bookmobiles and two 24/7 Library To Go kiosks, stretching from the coast at Del Mar and Encinitas out to the mountains and desert at Julian, Descanso and Borrego Springs. In fiscal year 2015–16 it circulated over 11.5 million items, making it one of the 25 busiest library systems in the country.

SDCL is not the same as the San Diego Public Library. This is the most common point of confusion for county residents. The City of San Diego runs its own independent system, the San Diego Public Library (a central library plus 36 branches). Several other incorporated cities also run their own city libraries — Carlsbad, Chula Vista, Coronado, Escondido, National City and Oceanside — and are not part of SDCL. SDCL serves the areas those city systems do not.

A single free SDCL library card borrows across every SDCL branch. This page lists 27 of the system’s 33 branches that we have individually verified, each with its address, hours and services on its own page.

📱 Free digital access with your card

A free San Diego County Library card unlocks ebooks, audiobooks and digital magazines through Libby (OverDrive), SDCL’s primary digital collection, plus a selection of additional titles through The Palace Project app (provided in partnership with the California State Library and Lyrasis). The library’s eLibrary portal also provides free access to research and learning tools including PressReader, LinkedIn Learning, Rosetta Stone and The New York Times. (SDCL offers Libby and Palace rather than hoopla or Kanopy — those are offered by the separate San Diego Public Library.)
