The Allerton Public Library serves the Wayne County town of Allerton, which was platted by the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad in 1870 and became a legal town in 1874. The library occupies the Centennial Building at 103 South Central Avenue, a landmark in a community that once boasted a peak population of 1,600 during its railroad-division heyday. Today serving a population of around 430, the library holds more than 10,000 volumes covering fiction, nonfiction, large print, audiobooks, and videos. It is a member of the State Library of Iowa's Bridges Consortium, giving cardholders access to thousands of downloadable eBooks, audiobooks, and digital magazines through the Libby app. Notary public service is also available at no charge.
