📖 About Altadena Library District
Altadena Library District was established in December 1926 under California Education Code as an independent public library district, having previously operated under the Los Angeles County library system since 1903. The main branch at 600 E. Mariposa Street opened in 1967 in a building celebrated for its International Style architecture softened by Asian influence — featuring clerestory windows, a sunken reading area with skylighting, and bronze sculptures by artist David Oliver Green at the entrance. In 2025, voters approved Measure Z, providing $21.125 million in bond funds to restore and future-proof the building; construction began in February 2026 and is expected to take approximately 18 months. During renovation the district operates fully from the Bob Lucas Memorial Library & Literacy Center (2659 Lincoln Avenue, (626) 798-8338) and the Altadena Library at Loma Alta Park (3330 N. Lincoln Avenue). The Bob Lucas branch also houses a Fab Lab makerspace, a passport acceptance facility, and a Curiosity Connection mobile library.
