📖 About Fall River Public Library
Fall River Public Library was founded in 1861, evolving from the Fall River Athenaeum — a subscription library dating to 1835 — into a free public institution. When an 1886 fire destroyed part of the collection, the city authorized a new home, and the current landmark granite building at 104 North Main Street opened in 1899. A comprehensive restoration completed in 2003 preserved the original vaulted ceilings and marble accents while modernizing the facility. The library is a member of the SAILS Library Network, giving cardholders borrowing access to dozens of southeastern Massachusetts libraries. In 2024 the library launched a new bookmobile — funded through federal pandemic relief — expanding outreach to neighborhoods across the city. The phrase "The People's University" is carved into the original exterior stonework, a motto the library has lived for over 160 years.
