📖 About Waunakee Public Library
The library's story begins in 1909, when fifteen Waunakee women organized a community lending collection that quickly outgrew a club member's home and moved into Mrs. Michael Simon's hat shop on Main Street. By 1914 it had settled on the second floor of the Koltes Building with evening hours three nights a week. Over the following century the library grew alongside the village — Waunakee is famously the only town in the U.S. with that name — expanding its collection, programming, and physical space to serve one of Wisconsin's fastest-growing communities. Today the library is a member of the South Central Library System and maintains a rich local history archive of over 2,200 digitized photographs, historic plat maps dating to 1861, and oral-history recordings documenting how immigrant families built the community.
