The Franklin County Public Library has been the learning hub of Rocky Mount since philanthropist David K.E. Bruce donated the first building in the late 1930s. 📖 About Franklin County Public Library
The Franklin County Public Library traces its roots to the late 1930s, when U.S. Ambassador David K.E. Bruce — a Franklin County native who later served in London, Paris, and Bonn — donated a library building to the county along with furnishings and a starter collection of about 4,200 books. After joining forces with Patrick County Library from 1954 to 1976, the library moved into a larger building in 1986 and then doubled its footprint again in 2004 when it relocated to its current downtown Rocky Mount address. The system today includes the Rocky Mount Main Library, the Westlake Branch in Hardy (near Smith Mountain Lake, opened 2008), and a bookmobile. The main library owns more than 150,000 volumes, logs over 250,000 checkouts a year, and provides public computers used for more than 30,000 patron hours annually. A dedicated Local History Room preserves materials on Franklin County's past, and notary services are available by appointment.
