📖 About Ruiz Branch
The Daniel E. Ruiz Branch opened in January 2004 at Grove Boulevard and Riverside Drive, on a site with deep community roots: the same neighborhood had been served by an APL bookmobile since 1967, then by the Montopolis Branch (1968), the Riverside Drive Branch (1983), and successive temporary locations before this purpose-built facility arrived. Designed by Duffy Stanley, FAIA and Liz Salaiz, AIA of Stanley Studio, the 16,000-square-foot building won the Austin Chronicle's Best New Public Building award for 2004. The design emphasizes sustainable construction and natural light: a tall perimeter clerestory floods the main collections area with diffused daylight, while tapered faceted concrete columns, warm Lueder's limestone coursing, folded metal awnings, and a dedicated children's reading bay give the building its distinctive crafted character. The branch serves Council District 3 — one of Austin's most diverse and predominantly Latino districts — and reflects that identity through bilingual programming and Spanish-language collections. It is the only Austin Public Library branch to offer U.S. passport application acceptance by appointment.
