📖 About Carver Branch
The Carver Branch is a neighborhood library serving East Austin at 1161 Angelina Street. Its lineage traces to a modest wood-frame building erected in 1926, later moved to the east side of town on Angelina Street to serve Austin's African American community, where it was long known as the 'Colored Branch.' The building was renamed the George Washington Carver Library in 1947. When a newer library was completed adjacent to the original structure in 1979, the historic building began its transition into a cultural center, and the George Washington Carver Museum opened in 1980 on the same site. Today the Carver Branch operates as a full-service Austin Public Library location alongside the museum and genealogy center. The pairing gives the branch a distinctive role connecting everyday library service with East Austin's cultural heritage.
