The Hadley Park Branch stands at 1039 28th Avenue North in North Nashville, at the edge of historic Hadley Park and within reach of Tennessee State University and Fisk University. It opened in 1952 as the first branch added to the Nashville library system since 1919, and it was built to serve the African American community; for years it was the only Nashville-Davidson County library that Black residents were permitted to use. The branch sits on land that was once part of the John Hadley Plantation, ground later given over to the park and community facilities that anchor this part of the city. In 1995 the building was completely renovated, roughly doubling its size and modernizing its spaces. Today it offers meeting rooms, public computers, Wi-Fi, and printing, along with a seed exchange for local gardeners. Its history makes it one of the most significant sites in the story of library access for Black Nashvillians.
