The Story of the Library in Bayamón

The Biblioteca Municipal de Bayamón was named for Dra. Pilar Barbosa de Rosario (1898–1997), a native of Bayamón, historian and educator, and the daughter of Bayamón-born statesman José Celso Barbosa. Pilar Barbosa earned a doctorate in history from Clark University, became the first woman to teach at the University of Puerto Rico's College of Liberal Arts in 1921, and in 1993 was appointed the first female Official Historian of Puerto Rico, a role she held until her death.

The library opened on October 20, 2000, under the administration of mayor Ramón Luis Rivera Rivera, as a department of Bayamón's Municipal Education Department. Housed at the Centro Universitario de la Universidad Ana G. Méndez in Bayamón, it was equipped from the start with public computer stations, printers, and photocopiers, and has operated neighborhood Digital Education Centers in Barrio Nuevo, Sector La Morenita, and Barrio Dajaos to help close the digital divide.

About Public Libraries in Bayamón

Public library service in Bayamón is anchored by the Biblioteca Municipal de Bayamón Dra. Pilar Barbosa, a free municipal library run by the Municipio de Bayamón's Departamento de Educación Municipal and co-administered with the Universidad Ana G. Méndez (UAGM) under a formal collaboration agreement. It is open at no charge to Bayamón residents and the general community — not just university students — offering print and digital collections, public computers, printing, and Wi-Fi. Puerto Rico does not issue a single island-wide public library card; residents use their municipal library on site and can register for free statewide digital access through the Biblioteca Nacional de Puerto Rico.

The Biblioteca Nacional de Puerto Rico and its Biblioteca Digital de Puerto Rico (part of the Instituto de Cultura Puertorriqueña) give residents free online access to digitized Puerto Rican books, historical documents, periodicals, and cultural collections — including public-domain works and materials contributed by the University of Puerto Rico, the Ateneo Puertorriqueño, and the Supreme Court of Puerto Rico. Residents can also request items in advance and consult the BNPR catalog online.
