📖 About Biblioteca Municipal Doctora Pilar Barbosa
The Biblioteca Municipal Doctora Pilar Barbosa is the public library of Bayamón, Puerto Rico, a municipality of 185,000 people — the second most populated in Puerto Rico after San Juan — known historically as the 'City of Science' and 'Pork Rind City.' The library takes its name from Dr. Pilar Barbosa de Rosario (1898–1997), who was born in Bayamón on July 4, 1898, as the daughter of José Celso Barbosa, the 'Father of the Puerto Rican Statehood Movement.' She became the first woman to teach at the University of Puerto Rico's College of Liberal Arts (1921), founded the Department of History and Social Sciences there in 1929, and in 1993 was appointed the first female Official Historian of Puerto Rico, a post she held until her death at age 98. Located on Avenida Ramón Luis Rivera in Barrio Pueblo near the historic center of Bayamón, the library provides free access to materials, public computers, Wi-Fi, and educational programming. Puerto Rico's municipal libraries operate independently of the state library system (the Biblioteca del Estado, housed at the Instituto de Cultura Puertorriqueña); there is no single statewide digital subscription service for municipal cardholders, but the municipality makes Internet-connected computers available free of charge at the library.
