📖 About Hatch Public Library
The seeds of the Hatch Public Library were planted in November 1946, when Mrs. T.E. Louise George Vetter convened the first Library Board in her own home, determined that the village needed a public library. The library opened in January 1947 in Hammell Hall above the Taylor Morris Building, moved to Wilson Street in 1949, and by the 1980s had outgrown its facilities. In 1984, the Santa Fe Railroad agreed to donate its historic 1935 depot to the Village of Hatch free of charge; through the efforts of Phil Bradshaw and Mayor Clifford Browning the depot was relocated to its present site on East Hall Street, renovated, and reopened as the library in October 1987. Today the building houses an automated catalog, an OverDrive digital checkout service, the Newsbank newspaper archive, and free access to El Portal databases from the New Mexico State Library. A bilingual staff member assists the area's Spanish-speaking farmworker community with document translation, and STEM-themed children's kits, Mango language learning, and summer reading programs round out a calendar built for every age.
