📖 About Thomas Branigan Memorial Library
The Thomas Branigan Memorial Library traces its roots to 1924, when the Woman's Improvement Association established a community library in Las Cruces. In 1935, a bequest from Alice Branigan — made in memory of her husband, Civil War officer and prominent rancher Capt. Thomas Branigan — allowed the city to establish a formal public library. The original 1935 building at 106 W Hadley Street, now listed on the National Register of Historic Places, today serves as the Branigan Cultural Center. The library moved to its current 36,800-square-foot home at 200 E Picacho Avenue in 1979, with subsequent expansions including a computer lab (1992), a Gates Foundation technology upgrade (1999), and the Roadrunner Room addition (2010). Former director Carol A. Brey-Casiano served as president of the American Library Association in 2004–2005, bringing national recognition to Las Cruces. The library is part of Las Cruces Public Libraries, which serves all Doña Ana County residents with free cards and also provides services through two satellite locations at senior centers.
