📖 About Deptford Free Public Library
Founded on January 11, 1961, when the Deptford Library Association formed, the library first opened its doors on July 15, 1961 with just 1,589 books in a room off Deptford High School. By September 1963 it moved into a dedicated building, and in 1972 Deptford Township voters approved a referendum — 4,470 to 1,883 — to make it a full municipal library. The current Ward Drive location opened in 1981 and underwent its first major renovation in 1998, with restroom and interior updates continuing through 2023 and 2024. Today the collection stands at approximately 60,000 books and 4,400 DVDs serving around 6,000 active cardholders. The library added a Makerspace with creative equipment in recent years and offers museum passes for community members — a rarity among small-township libraries in South Jersey.
