📖 About Sedalia Public Library

Sedalia Public Library opened in 1900 after Andrew Carnegie awarded the city $50,000 to construct what became Missouri's first Carnegie library. The Greek Revival building at 311 W 3rd Street, designed by the Chicago firm of Shepley, Rutan and Coolidge, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. The two-story cruciform structure — seven bays wide with an Ionic portico — still houses the original stacks alongside modern public computers, Wi-Fi, and digital lending. The library serves residents of Sedalia and Pettis County with free borrowing privileges, outreach delivery to homebound patrons and senior facilities, and genealogy research resources including microfilm of the Sedalia Democrat dating to December 1871.
