📖 About Greenwood-Leflore Public Library
Greenwood-Leflore Public Library was established on October 1, 1914, making it one of the oldest public libraries in the Mississippi Delta. The library owes its founding to Lizzie George Henderson, daughter of U.S. Senator J.Z. George and a leading figure in the Greenwood Women's Club, who successfully applied for a $10,000 grant from the Carnegie Foundation (awarded September 29, 1911) and donated the corner lot at Washington Avenue and Henderson Street as the building site. The construction contract was awarded to Humphries and McGinnis; ground was broken on November 14, 1913, and the building opened the following year. The Woman's Club raised a further $10,000 for an annex that now serves as the adjacent Confederate Memorial Building. As Greenwood and Leflore County grew, the system expanded: by 1979 the library relocated to its current facility at 405 West Washington Street to accommodate the community's needs. Today the system operates more than one branch and welcomes more than 20,000 visits annually. It provides 28 public access computers across its locations, over 40 magazine subscriptions, meeting rooms available to community groups, exam proctoring services, and access to MAGNOLIA, Mississippi's statewide Legislature-funded research database consortium.
