📖 About Ferndale Area District Library
The Ferndale Public Library opened in November 1930 at 130 Nine Mile Road, issuing 1,500 library cards in its very first year. In 1937 the library's Friends group became the first Friends of the Library organization in Michigan — a sign of the deep community investment that has defined the institution ever since. A new facility opened at 222 E. Nine Mile Road on April 25, 1954, with Michigan Governor G. Mennen Williams as the honored guest. The building doubled in size between 2007 and 2010 through a $3.7 million voter-approved expansion that added geothermal heating and cooling and a green roof, making it one of Oakland County's more environmentally thoughtful public buildings. The library officially became an independent district library in 2004 with an elected board, and in 2019 it eliminated all overdue fines, ensuring that cost is never a barrier to access. Today's collection holds over 73,000 items; 36 public computers serve patrons; and the Michigan Activity Pass program provides cardholders free and discounted entry to hundreds of state parks, historic sites, and cultural institutions across Michigan.
