📖 About Southfield Public Library
The Southfield Public Library's roots reach back to 1844, when library services began in Southfield Township. The first modern public library opened February 3, 1960, in a converted schoolhouse; it moved in 1964 to the Southfield Civic Center and expanded in 1980. The current building, designed to serve both Southfield and Lathrup Village, opened June 15, 2003, following a millage approved by more than 83 percent of voters — one of the most decisive library votes in Michigan history. Its 2011 millage renewal passed with the same overwhelming support. The library holds roughly 280,000 books, magazines, audiobooks, DVDs, music CDs, and e-books, and houses four rotating exhibit areas plus a Small Business StartUp Center and a seed library.
