The Berkley Public Library was established in 1928 by the Berkley Women's Club and operated from the second floor of City Hall until the city built a dedicated library building in 1964, which was renovated and expanded to 15,000 square feet in 1998. The library serves the city of Berkley, a dense, walkable community of about 15,000 in Oakland County, Michigan. Its collection of roughly 85,000 items includes 60,000 hardcover books, 10,000 paperbacks, 5,500 DVDs, 2,700 CDs, and 2,500 audiobooks, with about 400 new items added monthly. The library is fine-free and is a member of The Library Network (TLN), a consortium of more than 50 public libraries in Wayne, Oakland, Washtenaw, St. Clair, and Livingston counties, giving cardholders access to a shared catalog of over 500,000 titles and statewide delivery through MeLCat.
