📖 About Jamaica Plain Branch
Library service in Jamaica Plain began in June 1876 as a modest reading room in Curtis Hall, making it the first BPL branch to purchase books from public funds as early as September 1877. A fire in 1908 destroyed that building, and the current structure at 30 South Street opened on July 24, 1911, notable for its large schoolhouse windows and two fireplaces. An addition followed in 1936 and interior renovations in 1963. In June 2015 the branch closed for a comprehensive $10 million restoration that increased usable space by 20 percent; it reopened on May 20, 2017 with expanded areas for reading, browsing, computer access, meetings, and community programming. Today the branch holds a Spanish-language collection, maintains the Jamaica Plain Project for community engagement, and rotates art exhibitions throughout the year — with notary services available by drop-in.
