📖 About Mattapan Branch

The Mattapan Branch, a roughly 20,665-square-foot building designed by William Rawn Associates, was completed in 2009 as part of a city effort to bring notable civic architecture to Boston's neighborhoods. Built to LEED standards, it uses extensive glazing, daylighting, and warm, naturally lit interiors, and pairs an open reading room with an outdoor courtyard that blurs the line between indoor and outdoor space; additional sustainability features include water conservation, a cool roof, on-site stormwater infiltration, bike storage, and parking for alternative-fuel vehicles. The design drew wide recognition, including the 2011 National AIA/ALA Library Building Award and a 2012 AIA New England Design Excellence Honor Award. Serving a community with deep Haitian and Caribbean roots, the branch maintains French, Haitian-Creole, and Spanish language collections and offers homework help for students in grades K through 8.
