📖 About South End Branch

The South End Branch is one of the Boston Public Library's oldest, first opening in 1877 inside the Mercantile Library Association building, and after stops at English High School, the Every Day Church, and the John J. Williams Municipal Building, it returned on June 7, 1971 to a new building at 685 Tremont Street on the site of that original Mercantile building. The concrete branch was designed by architect Romaldo Giurgola, whose modern one-story structure served roughly 50,000 South End residents with gallery space for exhibitions, Chinese and Spanish world-language collections, and an adjacent Library Park. In late April 2022 a flood destroyed the mechanical equipment in the basement and a second flood caused further damage, leading the Library to close the branch until further notice and redirect patrons to the Central and Roxbury branches. Rather than repair the aging building, the city approved a roughly $32 million project to construct a new two-story, flood-resilient branch on the same Tremont Street site, nearly doubling its size and targeting reopening around 2027. Until then, South End holds are routed to other BPL locations while the neighborhood awaits its rebuilt library.
