📖 About St. Charles Public Library District
The St. Charles Public Library District traces its roots to an 1889 subscription Library Association and became a tax-supported public library in 1906, when township residents voted to open it to the whole community. In December 1908 it moved into a Carnegie building funded by a $12,500 gift from Andrew Carnegie plus local donations, designed by Chicago architects Phillips, Rogers & Woodyatt; that original structure survives today as the Carnegie Quiet Room and Carnegie Community Room after successive additions in 1925, 1963 and a major 35,000-square-foot expansion opened in 1988. Between 2019 and 2021 the district completed an $18.6 million renovation by Sheehan Nagle Hartray Architects, reopening the roughly 50,000-square-foot library in 2021 with five meeting rooms, a coffee shop, an outdoor terrace and the STC Creative makerspace. A SWAN consortium member since 2018 and part of RAILS, the library serves about 55,900 residents and shares a catalog of over 200,000 electronic items with 100 Chicagoland libraries.
