📖 About Harold Washington Library Center

Opened in 1991 and named for Chicago's first Black mayor, the Harold Washington Library Center fills an entire block at 400 South State Street. Designed by Hammond, Beeby and Babka in a monumental, Beaux-Arts-inspired postmodern style, its red-brick-and-granite façade is topped by five aluminum owls: a great horned owl spreads its wings above the State Street entrance as a symbol of wisdom, while four barn owls perch at the roof's corners amid swirls of leaves and seed pods. Inside, a glass-roofed Winter Garden on the ninth floor brings daylight to a top-floor conservatory, and the building holds special collections including the Chicago Blues Archive and the dedicated Thomas Hughes Children's Library.
