📖 About Blackstone Branch — Chicago Public Library
The Blackstone Branch opened on January 8, 1904, constructed through a bequest in the will of railroad magnate Timothy Beach Blackstone; his widow Isabella Norton Blackstone donated the land and funded the building. Architect Solon S. Beman designed the 13,794-square-foot structure in the Classical Revival style, drawing inspiration from his Merchant Tailors Building at the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition and the Erechtheum on the Athenian Acropolis. Its 12-inch-thick granite walls, 2,800-pound bronze doors, marble rotunda, and custom mahogany furnishings made it the most architecturally distinguished branch in the CPL system from day one. A WPA-funded children's room annex was added between 1938 and 1939, and a major restorative renovation preserving all original finishes was completed in 1977–1980; a centennial renovation followed in 2004. Designated a Chicago Landmark on December 8, 2010, the branch continues as an active neighborhood library serving approximately 50,000 residents across Hyde Park, Kenwood, and Oakland, with the Friends of Blackstone Branch Library — founded in 2003 — providing volunteer support for community programming.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Blackstone Branch a Chicago Landmark, and can I see the historic interior?
Yes. The branch was officially designated a Chicago Landmark on December 8, 2010, for its exceptional 1902–1904 Classical Revival architecture. The historic interior — including the Tiffany-style dome, Italian marble mosaic floors, and Oliver Dennett Grover's four ceiling murals — is fully accessible to the public during regular library hours at no charge.
Who funded the Blackstone Branch, and why is it unique in the CPL system?
The Blackstone Branch is the only one of CPL's 79 branches built entirely with private funds. Unlike dozens of other CPL branches, it received no Carnegie grant.
What are Blackstone Branch's hours and how do I get there?
The branch is open Monday and Wednesday noon–8 pm, Tuesday and Thursday 10 am–6 pm, Friday and Saturday 9 am–5 pm, and Sunday 1–5 pm. The address is 4904 S. Lake Park Avenue, Chicago, IL 60615, in the Kenwood neighborhood. A bike rack is available on site.
Does Blackstone Branch participate in the Great Kids Museum Passport program?
Yes. CPL cardholders can pick up museum passes at Blackstone Branch for free admission to participating Chicago-area cultural institutions including museums and the zoo. Availability varies; call (312) 747-0511 or visit chipublib.org to confirm current pass options.
