📖 About Dougherty County Public Library — Central Library
The Dougherty County Public Library traces its roots to 1900, when the Albany Library Association formed after a short-lived subscription library (1879–1887) had folded. Early collections lived in the Chautauqua Auditorium; in 1905 industrialist Andrew Carnegie donated $10,700, and the resulting Italian Renaissance building with marble Ionic columns opened in 1906. A major 1992 rehabilitation brought ADA compliance and HVAC to that historic structure, and a new Central Library opened the same year one block away to house the growing collection. The Carnegie building now serves as a gallery and museum. Today the Central Library at 300 Pine Avenue is the hub of a five-branch system with a collection of roughly 392,000 items circulating nearly 461,000 times annually. Cardholders tap into PINES — the Georgia Public Library Service's statewide catalog covering 53 library systems — and GALILEO, which provides more than 100 databases indexing thousands of periodicals and scholarly journals.
