📖 About Berkeley Public Library — Central
Berkeley Public Library traces its roots to 1893, when it opened on Shattuck Avenue with 264 books. The current Central Library at 2090 Kittredge Street was funded by an Andrew Carnegie grant and built between 1931 and 1934 on land donated by Rosa Shattuck — the site of her rose garden — a fact honored in the library's own history as an 'auspicious place to plant and grow Berkeley's prized jewel.' Architect James W. Plachek designed the structure in a Zig Zag Moderne style; it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982 and thoroughly renovated in 2002. Five floors house youth services, teen collections, the Berkeley History Room, an Art, Music & Recreation floor, and community meeting rooms. The system pioneered fine-free borrowing for adult materials in 2018 and offers an Easy Access Card for patrons without a fixed address.
