📖 About Alameda Free Library

The Alameda Free Reading Room and Library Association was founded in August 1877 with 330 volumes in a shop on Park Street, making it one of the earliest public libraries in California. By 1879 it had transferred to municipal control under California's Rogers Act, and in 1903 a Carnegie-funded building at Santa Clara Avenue and Oak Street opened — dedicated after Andrew Carnegie ultimately donated $35,000. That historic Neoclassical-Renaissance Revival-Baroque Revival structure, designed by architects Willcox & Curtis and built of distinctive buff brick, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. After the original building closed in 1998, the library operated from Alameda High School until the current Main Library at 1550 Oak Street opened on November 2, 2006, with support from a $15.5 million state grant and a voter-approved bond. The system today runs three branch locations — West End (788 Santa Clara Ave), Bay Farm Island (3221 Mecartney Rd), and the literacy-focused Alameda Reads (2203 Central Ave) — along with a Local History & Genealogy collection that includes a digitized run of Alameda newspapers from 1869 to 1966.
