📖 About Harmon Library
Harmon Library has anchored the Central City South neighborhood since 1950, when it opened as the Phoenix Public Library system's very first branch — built on land donated by the Harmon Foundation on what was then a predominantly low-income block at 411 W. Yavapai. After nearly six decades of service in that original home, the branch moved on August 28, 2009, into a landmark new 12,400-square-foot building at 1325 S. 5th Ave., designed by richärd + bauer, llc. The new structure earned a 2011 AIA/ALA Library Building Award of Excellence for its kaleidoscope-inspired architecture: colored linear skylights and slot windows scatter refracted light across a soaring 25-foot central reading room. A reading patio outside preserves ceramic art panels salvaged from the original 1950 building, connecting generations of neighborhood history. Harmon is also the birthplace of the Phoenix Public Library's Seed Library, founded in 2014, where cardholders can check out more than 100 varieties of fruit, vegetable, and perennial seeds.
