📖 About Cesar Chavez Branch Library

The Cesar Chavez Branch Library anchors the fast-growing Laveen community in southwest Phoenix, completed in January 2007 and designed by Line and Space. The 25,000-square-foot building sits inside an existing park beside a man-made lake, and its arced form echoes the lake's geometry while nestling into an earth mound left over from the lake's excavation, letting the structure read as part of the parkscape rather than an object dropped onto it. A dramatic overhanging roof shields the interior from the harsh desert sun, and the design leans on solar orientation, water harvesting, natural daylighting, and tempered outdoor microclimates to cut energy use. An overhang paired with reused building-exhaust air conditions an outdoor reading patio, where adjustable spot diffusers let visitors fine-tune their own comfort. The architects framed the park as the community's backyard and the library as its living room, a shared indoor place for families to gather or read quietly. The project earned LEED Silver certification and was named one of the AIA Committee on the Environment's Top Ten Green Projects for 2008.
