📖 About Unalaska Public Library
The Unalaska Public Library was established in 1995 to serve the fast-growing population around Dutch Harbor, using donated materials in a World War II-era Burma Road Chapel. In 1999 the library moved into a purpose-built 12,000 square-foot building — expanded and renovated again in 2022 — that now holds over 30,000 circulating items including books, audiobooks, DVDs, and periodicals. The library's most distinctive holding is the Aleutian Region Newspaper Collection, preserving historical and current issues of papers such as the Dutch Harbor Fisherman that document life at one of the planet's most remote commercial ports. It belongs to the statewide OCLC WorldCat interlibrary loan network and serves one of Alaska's most ethnically diverse communities, where Unangan (Aleut) heritage runs deep and dozens of nationalities are represented among the seasonal workforce.
