Founded in 1969 by a citizen-led Friends-of-the-Library group, the Vestavia Hills Library has grown from a modest collection of 7,000 books in the Civic Center to one of the most architecturally distinctive libraries in the Southeast. After moving to 1112 Montgomery Highway in 1995, the city launched a $4 million challenge grant in 2002 to fund an entirely new facility. The resulting 35,000-square-foot building, opened in the mid-2000s on nine wooded acres of the Wald Estate at Round Hill Road and Highway 31 North, earned distinction as Alabama's first LEED Gold-certified library. Over 80 percent of the trees harvested during construction were reincorporated into the building — pine ceilings, poplar entry hall, and oak furnishings — while a rooftop garden insulates the structure and a water-collection system cuts consumption by 40 percent.
