Founded in 1921 in a Scout Club house on the Tallapoosa River, the Tallassee Community Library has served readers in Elmore and Tallapoosa counties for over a century — the same years the local mills clothed the nation and powered Alabama Power's first Thurlow Dam.

The Tallassee Community Library traces its roots to 1921, when community members established a reading room in the Scout Club House at the city's mill-town heart. In 1978, Tallassee Mills donated the building to the city, securing the library's permanent home. The Mildred Weedon Blount Reading and Reference Room, a significant expansion, formally opened in November 1989, nearly doubling research space. Today the collection tops 33,000 items — regular, large-print and audiobooks — plus ten public computers, an iPad station for children, free Wi-Fi, fax and copy services. The library handles over 56,000 circulation transactions a year and belongs to the Alabama Public Library Service network, giving cardholders digital access through CamelliaNet, Ancestry Library Edition, Kanopy streaming and Homework Alabama tutoring.
