The Fayette County Memorial Library has served the citizens of Fayette County from 326 Temple Avenue North since its founding in 1921, when the women of the Progress Club formed a civic and literary organization and began with just 68 donated books. Today the library offers a dedicated genealogy room, notary public services, fax and copying, and free access to the Alabama Virtual Library for every county resident.

📖 About Fayette County Memorial Library

The Fayette County Memorial Library traces its origins to March 1921, when the Progress Club, Inc. of Fayette — a women's civic and literary organization — established the first library in a building provided by Dr. J. A. Branyon, starting with 68 donated books. Over the following century the library grew into the county's primary information hub, moving to its current home at 326 Temple Avenue North and expanding its services well beyond those original shelves. Today the library is governed by a Board of Trustees and staffed by a small professional team including a director, librarian, programmer, circulation supervisor and collection specialist. The Evelyn W. Robertson Genealogy Department on the second floor holds a specialized collection of locally published and historical materials for family history researchers, available by appointment with Genealogy Librarian Jeff Hodges. The library also provides a Notary Public, fax and copy services, laminating, binding, interlibrary loan, a Parent & Autism Resource Center, and study and meeting spaces — services that distinguish it well beyond a basic lending library. Fayette, the county seat of Fayette County, was originally known as La Fayette when it incorporated in 1821; the name was shortened to Fayette in 1898.
