📖 About Otto Bruyns Public Library of Northfield
The Otto Bruyns Public Library of Northfield traces its roots to 1926, when 100 books were placed in the office of Mayor Eugene Swilkey and Miss Lizzie Price became the library's first librarian — a post she held until her retirement in 1947 at age 82. A 1939 painting of her home still hangs in the library's entrance. The library moved several times before the City of Northfield passed a resolution in 1983 to rename it in honour of Otto Bruyns, a lifelong resident who had served as mayor from 1965 to 1975 and was known affectionately as 'Mr. Northfield' for his deep commitment to civic life and local institutions. Bruyns attended the groundbreaking for the current building on W Mill Road on March 26, 1988, though he passed away before its completion. Today the library serves the Northfield community with four weeknight evenings open until 8 p.m., a community room for public meetings and events, public computers and free Wi-Fi, a multilingual website (English, Spanish, Chinese, Korean and more), and a catalog on the Aspen Discovery platform. It is affiliated with the Atlantic County Library System and unlocks the JerseyClicks statewide database portal for all New Jersey residents.
