The Story of the Library in Salt Lake City
Salt Lake City's first government-run free public library opened on February 14, 1898, on the top floor of the Salt Lake City and County Building. The system grew through the 20th century into a network of neighborhood branches, several of them architecturally notable in their own right.
The current Main Library, designed by Moshe Safdie and Associates with VCBO Architecture, opened in 2003 at 210 East 400 South. Its sweeping crescent-shaped wall, rooftop terrace and light-filled glass "Urban Room" made it an instant civic landmark. Among the branches, the Chapman Branch at 577 South 900 West is a Carnegie library that opened on May 28, 1918 — funded by a $25,000 grant from the Carnegie Corporation of New York and long regarded as one of the finest Carnegie libraries in the West.
