📖 About Julian Library

The Julian Library is part of the San Diego County Library (SDCL) system and serves Julian, a 19th-century gold-mining and apple-orchard town in the mountains of eastern San Diego County. For more than thirty years the town's library operated out of the historic Witch Creek School — an 1888-era one-room schoolhouse that the Julian Historical Society moved into town and restored, opening it as a library in 1971. The County later built a far larger joint-use branch of roughly 9,500 square feet on the campus of Julian Union High School at 1850 Highway 78, giving the town a modern collection, public computers and meeting space while students share the facility. As an SDCL branch, a Julian card borrows across the entire county system and unlocks its digital library, which matters in a rural mountain community where the nearest large branches are many winding miles away.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Julian Library the old Witch Creek Schoolhouse?

No — but it's the successor to it. The Julian Historical Society restored the historic Witch Creek School and ran it as the town's library from 1971. The current branch is a newer, much larger joint-use building on the Julian Union High School campus at 1850 Highway 78.

Why does the Julian Library share a building with the high school?

It is a joint-use facility: San Diego County built a roughly 9,500-square-foot branch on the Julian Union High School campus so a small mountain town could have a modern public library while students also use the space — a common model for rural communities.

What days is the Julian Library open?

Monday through Friday. Tuesday runs 12 p.m.–7 p.m. (the late night), Monday and Wednesday–Thursday 10 a.m.–6 p.m., Friday 10 a.m.–5 p.m. The branch is closed Saturday and Sunday.
