📖 About Escondido Public Library

Escondido Public Library's roots go back to 1890, when the Escondido Dramatic Club donated proceeds from a performance to purchase the city's first books, distributed at a local school. A formal reading room opened in 1894 after the Escondido Land and Town Company donated a lot on Grand Avenue, and in 1898 the city assumed full operational control. A Carnegie grant funded the second building in 1910, and steady growth drove a third facility in 1956. The current two-story, 40,000-square-foot main library opened in December 1980 and serves more than 151,000 Escondido residents with over 166,000 volumes and more than 514,000 annual circulations. In 2017 the city council contracted operations to Library Systems & Services (LS&S), a national library management firm, while the city retains ownership of the collection and building. The Pioneer Room, opened in 1992 and funded by a bequest from historian Frances Beven Ryan, houses books, journals, photographs, and archival material on the region's heritage and draws genealogists from across Southern California.
