📖 About Algonquin Area Public Library District
The Algonquin Area Public Library District traces its roots to February 23, 1921, when members of the Algonquin Women's Club organized the community's first library in the Village Hall council room with 126 books and a $600 book fund, with Erma Taylor as the founding librarian. The library became tax-supported in 1925 and a formal library district was established in 1962. A dedicated building opened in 1977 at 115 Eastgate Drive; by 2001 the district had grown enough to open the current 35,000-square-foot Main Library at 2600 Harnish Drive, built with a $7.8-million bond. The district celebrated its centennial in 2021 and in 2024–2025 completed a major renovation of the Eastgate Branch, now marking 50 years in its location. Today AAPLD circulates more than 900,000 materials and welcomes 300,000+ visitors annually across both facilities, and has been fine-free for all patrons since July 1, 2019.
