📖 About Chula Vista Public Library — Civic Center Branch
The Chula Vista Public Library was born in 1891 when concerned citizens formed the Chula Vista Library Association and opened a reading room in a building donated by the San Diego Land & Town Company. For decades the library served a growing city at the southern edge of San Diego Bay. In 1976, combining Federal Revenue Sharing funds and city financing, Chula Vista built a new bicentennial library on the site of the former F Street Elementary School — a 185,000-volume flagship that became the Civic Center Branch. In 1999 the Board of Trustees created the John Rojas Local History Room at this branch to preserve materials on Chula Vista's heritage, honoring historian John Rojas Jr. (1930–2000), who founded the Chula Vista Historical Society in 1981. Since 2010 the northwest corner has been designated the Veterans Wing, providing counseling space, veterans' information, and specialized media. The library system now operates additional branches in South Chula Vista and Otay Ranch, but the Civic Center Branch remains the city's primary reference and lending hub.
