📖 About Somerton Library
The Somerton Library is a branch of the Yuma County Library District, a county-wide system whose roots trace to the 1915 Yuma City Club reading room and the Carnegie Library that opened in 1921. The Somerton branch debuted in April 1959, one of the earliest expansions of the then-Yuma City-County Library into the farming towns of the lower Colorado River valley. The district was formally reorganized as the Yuma County Free Library District in 1987, and voters backed it with a 77-percent approval in 1988; a $53.7 million bond passed in 2005 funded sweeping renovations across all locations. Today the Somerton Library provides bilingual collections, public computers with free Wi-Fi, storytimes and youth programs, and digital access through Libby, hoopla and the statewide Reading Arizona collection to the residents of Somerton — a predominantly Spanish-speaking border community — and surrounding unincorporated Yuma County.
