📖 About South Orange Public Library

The first meeting to establish a library in South Orange was held in 1864 at the home of William J. Beebe, a tea merchant who became the first Library Board President. In 1896 the library relocated to its Scotland Road home on land donated by Eugene Connett under the condition it be used exclusively for library purposes. On April 27, 1926, South Orange voters approved a referendum making the library a municipal, tax-supported institution under the Village. The current 65 Scotland Road building, constructed in 1968, is now undergoing a comprehensive Building Connections renovation project; the library has been operating from two temporary locations since early 2024 and expects to reopen the renovated main building in early 2027. In late 2023 the library joined the BCCLS (Bergen County Cooperative Library System) consortium, giving South Orange cardholders access to more than 75 libraries across northern New Jersey. The library supports the Village's diverse community with museum passes, notary services, a tech studio, digital resources, and birdwatching kits.
