📖 About Madison Public Library
The Madison Public Library is the municipal public library of the Borough of Madison, in Morris County, New Jersey. Library service in Madison dates to 1900, when the James Library — a granite-and-limestone building given by D. Willis James — opened on Memorial Day at the corner of Main Street and Green Village Road; that landmark still stands and today houses the Museum of Early Trades and Crafts. The present library building at 39 Keep Street, designed by the firm McDowell-Goldstein, opened to the public in February 1969. After a roughly year-and-a-half renovation that began in late 2023 — adding new lighting, wiring, carpeting, ADA-compliant restrooms and a reconfigured children's room, along with asbestos abatement — the main building reopened to the public on April 30, 2025, with a community grand re-opening held that June. As a member of the Main Library Alliance, a Madison card borrows across dozens of partner libraries throughout northern New Jersey.
