📖 About Buchanan County Public Library
Buchanan County occupies the far southwestern corner of Virginia in the heart of Appalachian coal country, bordered by Kentucky to the west and West Virginia to the north. The county seat of Grundy was named in 1876 for Felix Grundy, the U.S. Senator from Tennessee, and the surrounding mountains produced coal that powered much of the eastern United States through the twentieth century. Buchanan County Public Library holds more than 100,000 items and has built one of the region's strongest local history and genealogy collections, including The Virginia Mountaineer newspaper archives, county yearbooks and historical photographs. The library's Makerspace gives residents access to technology and equipment not readily available in a rural county, while the Mailbox Library and after-hours pickup lockers extend service to homebound and remote patrons.
