📖 About Mission Branch Library
The Mission Branch Library opened April 30, 2011, on Roosevelt Avenue within San Antonio's Mission-district and World Heritage corridor, occupying the former site of a neighborhood drive-in theater. Designed by the San Antonio firm Kell Muñoz, the 16,400-square-foot building wraps around two open-air courtyards and includes quiet study areas, a community meeting room, and 24 public-access computers. Its collection of roughly 50,000 items serves families across the surrounding South Side neighborhoods. Local artist Chris Sauter created permanent works throughout the site, including a mural layering the city's history and outdoor sculptures with embedded 'fossils' and 'artifacts' that nod to the area's mission-era past. An adjacent playground fitted with outdoor exercise equipment makes the branch a gathering spot as much as a place to read.
