📖 About Carver Branch Library

The Carver Branch Library takes its name from George Washington Carver, the pioneering African American scientist of the Tuskegee Institute, and has long served San Antonio's Eastside. Its origins trace to a small wooden building established during World War I by African American Army officers, and it grew into a permanent home built at a cost of roughly $215,000 with room for some 35,000 volumes. Today the collection numbers close to 57,000 items with particular strengths in African American studies and children's literature. The branch sits near the Carver Community Cultural Center, reinforcing its role as a neighborhood anchor for reading, learning and heritage. As of August 11, 2025 the building is closed for a $12.5 million renovation, and the branch is not currently open on its regular schedule. During construction, interim library services are offered at the nearby Denver Heights Community Center at 300 Porter St.
