📖 About Burton Barr Central Library

Burton Barr Central Library is the 280,000-square-foot flagship of the Phoenix Public Library system, opened in May 1995 and designed by Will Bruder with DWL Architects. Its ribbed copper cladding, north-facing shade sails, and motorized south-facade louvers manage the harsh Sonoran sun, while a five-level central staircase nicknamed the "crystal canyon" pulls visitors upward through the building. The celebrated Great Reading Room on the fifth floor spans a full acre and is among the largest library reading rooms in the country, capped by a roof engineered on Buckminster Fuller-inspired tensegrity principles. At solar noon around the summer solstice, skylights drop precise circles of light down the columns and the building's north-south axis. In July 2017 a storm-triggered sprinkler failure flooded the building and damaged roughly 6,000 books; after repairs to the fire-suppression system and roof, the library reopened in June 2018. Beyond books, it houses the Arizona Room for regional-history research, the College Depot planning center, Teen Central, a Rare Book Room, and the Children's Place.
