📖 About Edgewater Branch
The Edgewater Branch of the Chicago Public Library opened its current building at 6000 North Broadway on June 22, 2013, replacing an older branch that had served the neighborhood since April 14, 1973. Designed by Lohan Anderson as architect of record, the 16,300-square-foot, two-story structure cost roughly $13.7 million to build, is roughly 5,300 square feet larger than its predecessor, and was designed to earn LEED Gold certification for sustainability. The expanded footprint allowed the collection and technology to grow substantially: the branch went from just ten public computers to roughly fifty desktops plus laptops, and gained a large dividable community meeting room and two dedicated study rooms. A signature feature is Edgewater YOUmedia — an enclosed teen learning lab with its own dedicated teen librarian running programming in STEM and financial literacy. The branch also maintains a seed library and circulating collections in Spanish and other languages, reflecting Edgewater's standing as one of Chicago's most ethnically diverse community areas, home to significant East African, Scandinavian, and LGBTQ communities. The Red Line Bryn Mawr station is steps away.
