Verona Public Library's story begins around the turn of the twentieth century when a local woman, inspired by Wisconsin's traveling library program, brought books to community get-togethers until the Village agreed to provide space in the vacated Bank of Verona building. At the general election in the fall of 1911, Verona residents voted to establish a free public library, and in 1912 officers were elected and the library formally organized. It later joined the Dane County Library System and then the South Central Library System, a cooperative network of 54 public libraries in seven counties that offers a shared LINKcat catalog and daily delivery service. In 2006 the library moved into its current purpose-built home at 500 Silent Street, designed by Dimension IV, with a collection that has grown to more than 120,000 books, videos, music, games, and downloadable titles. Verona is today one of Wisconsin's fastest-growing cities, home to Epic Systems' global campus, and the library's extended evening hours — open until 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday — reflect that growing, tech-savvy community.
